WHITE PINE MORE STABLE
Eastern White Pine is more stable, due to it's straighter grain, Eastern White Pine is more resistant to twisting and warping, that is more characteristic of spiraled grained Southern Yellow Pine. This is particular true in relation to large timbers for log wall construction where twisting and warping can lead to unsightly gaps between logs that can allow air and water filtration.

WHITE PINE BETTER INSULATOR
Due to the loosely packed molecules in White Pine a true softwood, the dead air spaces between the molecules provide greater resistance to the flow of heat thru the log itself. In fact White Pine is more than 40% more efficient than Yellow Pine. So a 6" White Pine log offers more protection resistance to heat flow than a 8" Yellow Pine Log.

YELLOW PINE IS STONGER
Due to its tighgly packed molecules Yellow Pine is a superior structural wood. In a alog wall however, this strength is essentially wasted as the wall acts to transfer the load to the foundation- the log wall is not required or expect to carry signicant load over any sigificant span.

For girders and roof rafters, Yellow Pine it the proper choice. For log wall member Eastern White Pine it a far superior choice.

The log home industry has told customers for years, that it is better to purchase all your materials from them and not purchase the conventional materials locally. Well today you here the other side of that argument. Why would you purchase a item that you can purchase in your own community and you purchase those items in bulk, and receive a bulk discount. Also why would you want to pay shipping for items that you can purchase locally and have delivered to your job sight on a as needs basis and possibly limit construction theft, and possible damage to items like windows doors and other delicate items that come in log home packages.
